I just added to the vlc section of the wiki, information about managing vlc
server with init.d. This can be found at http://mvpmc.wikispaces.com/vlc.
The short explanation is that I wanted to encapsulate the vlc command
required to start/stop/restart/start-debug. One of the quite helpful
options to the init.d vlc script is start-debug, which creates a
verbose/debug file from vlc. Plus, I wanted vlc to be backgrounded and
running when the host comes up.
Hopefully this is useful to others.
