Right. You made it clear that you were starting with MJPEG. That's why I 
suggested using VLC to transcode it in real time to MPEG2, which can 
then be directly consumed by the MVP.

I haven't used VLC myself, so I'm not sure on the specifics of how you 
would hook it up to the loopback device providing MJPEG, how you specify 
  what formats you want it to output, and how you would access it from 
the MVP, but I believe it is theoretically possible with the existing 
mvpmc client.

Hopefully others familiar with VLC can fill in the blanks. If you don't 
get any responses, you might want to try asking on the developer list.

Yes. I think mvpmc includes an option where it will listen on a network 
port and display received messages on the on-screen-display. Once you 
saw a message, you'd have to stop what you were viewing, and navigate to 
the part of the UI where you can access the camera's stream. This could 
be used as a stop-gap way to inform you of activity until a more 
integrated solution is built.
