The contradictions you observed are a result of different procedures
being required for different versions of the MVP hardware.

My recommendation would be to look at the wiki:
http://mvpmc.wikispaces.com/

where you'll find more up to date HOWTOs that provide instructions
specific to the different hardware versions.

We've been discussing reorganizing the HOWTOs to make it easier to find
the relevant instructions for a given hardware version and boot server
operating system. We'll also be switching the links on mvpmc.org to
point to the newer HOWTOs.

Check the list archives of the developer list for a thread titled "save
settings via TFTP" (3/29/07) and "host used to download the config file"
(4/9/07), which detail most of the bootup process. (Eventually I'll be
documenting this on the wiki.)

I'm not sure whether the old hardware (pre-flash) makes use of a
broadcast to locate the TFTP server, or if it is fully dependent on
getting the BOOTP server from the DHCP server's reply. The mvpmc startup
code is definitely dependent on the DHCP server's reply for setting the
streaming server.

The newer hardware sends out a broadcast packet, which is responded to
by what I call a "glue" server, such as mvpboot:
http://mvpmc.wikispaces.com/perlboot

This server responds with a packet containing addresses for the TFTP
server and the streaming media server.

I believe this is just a stock error from the Hauppauge firmware saying
it can't find a Hauppauge streaming server on the network. It implies
that you didn't succeed in booting the mvpmc dongle, which you probably
already knew.
