mvpmc can display png files. However, it looks like the mclient code is only using mvpw_load_image_jpeg() and not mvpw_set_image(). The jpeg code is a lot more efficient, so you should continue to use it. But if you want other image types to work, you'll need to call mvpw_set_image() whenever mvpw_load_image_jpeg() fails (see fb.c for an example).
