I think this is to do with the mysql config file (my.cnf). I had this
problem and had to modify the config file. MySQL was only listening on
address 127.0.0.1 and I needed to change this to listen on the correct IP
address.
I think the mysql connection tests are via the mythtv backend so would
succeed by connecting to the loopback address.
