man page for mencoder:
-audio-preload <0.0-2.0> 
 Sets up the audio buffering time interval (default: 0.5s).

I tried a value of 0.0, but that made the sound choppy, i.e. take a gunshot, 
and now it sounds like a machine gun. Maybe my whole issue is the DVD I am 
trying to encode...  I will try a movie, instead of a TV show on DVD. I will 
keep you all updated.
