It is trying to remove the untarred mtd source so that it can untar it
again and rebuild it from a clean copy of the source.

I would recommend removing the dongle/apps/mtd/mvp directory as well as
the ~/downloads/mtd.tar.gz file.  That will force the build to redownload
it and rebuild it from scratch.  I think the most likely cause of your
build failure is a truncated mtd.tar.gz.
