Wouldn't this also run the chance of changes made by one puck 
overwriting changes made by another?  For example puck #1 writes changes 
to the configuration file.  Then without restarting puck #2 changes are 
made in another area.  Are both changes now properly reflected in the 
configuration file?  Does the software read the current configuration 
file prior to saving or just write the configuration of the current unit 
out en mass to the configuration file regardless of the current file's 
state?

I would suggest a settings file per unit based on MAC address sourced 
from a single configuration file.
