Hi,

I have been attempting to get mvpmc to display mpeg4 videos stored on a
computer, by transcoding them using VLC.

The computer is running Ubuntu 8.10 and I have been having a lot of trouble
with the packaged version of VLC. A bit of searching suggested to me that a
lot of people were having problems with this version of VLC. Most files just
wouldn’t play, quite often causing mvpmc to crash, when they do they are
using a huge amount of system resources on the transcoding computer.

After many hours of frustration I tried running the windows version of VLC
[0.9.9] on my Ubuntu system using Wine. It was by far the best performance I
had managed. So far I have done no configuration of Wine to improve the
performance [I'm completely new to Wine] and it is usable.

I thought I would share this in case it was useful to someone else. If
anyone with more experience with Wine could help me configure it I would be
very appreciative.

Regards,
Bill
