I just sort by received date and all my new emails are at the top. They aren't 
grouped, but I can hold the context in my brain!

The 7 first are on the first displayed page (having to look to "New
message" under each topic), I discovered this one on the 4th page, and
have still to look for the last one !

In french the word to be used for such "Google group" is brol !

I takes more time to search where the new posts are rather then
reading them !
