I only have the back button too, but my recurrence options are saved, and I go back to the edit screen. (Does yours?)Under recurrence it now says recurs every day, in grey text, the same text as it says "none" under reminder. (Because if you don't see that then it could be a font color issue) Back a second time saves and returns to main screen.
Finding the task in the list and tapping it shows detail and it says recurring. If you join the Android specific group you could see if anyone has the same model tablet as you.
