Hi, James. I'm about 80% certain that this is the correct answer to your
question but if it does not work out for you please write back and we can
try something else.

There are two different things called templates, which is confusing. A .mlt
file, if I'm not mistaken, is for creating new blank .ml files. As an
individual user there's not too much call for that. You might use it if you
were so thrilled with MLO that you were trying to get all your friends to
use it - you might set up a template that contains all of your favorite
folders, categories, flags, views and workspaces and save it as a template
to help your friends accomplish some of what you have accomplished.

If what you have a more like reusable lists of tasks for your own use, you
want the other kind of template. Create a folder and call it "templates" or
any other name you like). Mark the templates folder as hide-in-to-do and
do-not-archive. Set up your reusable lists in the templates folder as
projects or tasks with subtasks. Set up dependencies, start and due dates,
or whatever you need to make each list be as smart as you need it to be.

When you are ready to reuse one of the template lists, use the "new from
template" command that you already found. MLO will make a new copy of the
project wherever you asked for the new task to go. Dates will get adjusted
(the oldest date in the template will be set to today in the new copy and
all other dates will be offset appropriately. Try it.) Dependencies will
remain intact. Use the template again as often as you like.

I hope this works for you.
