Mouse Problem

Hi,
   I'm using a PS/2 mouse and it is behaving eccentrically. It reacts
for the first time when i restart gpm. After that it is not reacting.
Somebody please help me out.
 Distro - Slack-9.1
 Kernel - 2.4.22
 gpm version - 1.19.6
