Hi,
IMHO, It is more likely that once a process has locked the device for output,
no other device should write into it.
some applications may not lock /dev/dsp before writing to it,
but as far as I knoow two instances of xine running, only one
output is heard. if Artsd, the KDE sound server runs, mpg321 will not
give any output.
so, this may be the default behaviour of amny apps.
This , most probably is the problem you are facing and as Shashi
suggested, just disable beeps.
