Hi,
Thanks for the reply.  There is no urgency.  but still no sound.  I tried the live cd also, in it alsamixer shows master mono with 00 sound, which can not be increased.  How to check about libmadplugins?  XMMS plays mp3 files (with no sound ofcourse.).  lspci shows the sound card as Creative labs Ectiva EV1938.   After trying something (found in Ubuntu unofficial starter Guide), after opening XMMS in sudo, the following warning is seen:
** WARNING **: alsa_setup_mixer(): Failed to find mixer element: Master
I could not find sndconfig in Ubuntu or in the net.   (universe, multiverse enabled).  Hope you will spare some time to solve this.  I will send any other info required.

:), Guess, MyLUGgers are a busy lot nowadays, with exams, work, et al.

Anyways, try installing the package called "sndconfig". If it isn't available in Ubuntu main, then you may have to include Universe and Multiverse in your sources.list. Ubuntu Package Manager makes it easy for you.

Ensonique is the correct driver for Creative Vibra. Check whether the channels are muted by default. Also, check whether the correct libmadplugins are installed.

Do you get the sound, when you boot from your Live CD ?
