How long does saving take? And when changing zoom is it the redrawing of the
painting that takes a lot of time? How much time? The memory usage does not
sound abnormally high, but it will depend a lot on what you are doing with
MyPaint.
Without more concrete info its impossible for us to say if this low
performance is a bug or expected behavior. We know that MyPaint performance
is not top notch at the moment. Saving in particular has clear potential for
improvement.

MyPaint should work on any hardware, but it will (naturally) be slower on
older systems. A hot tip (applies to anything really) is too keep memory
usage below the level where the system will start to swap memory to disk.
Ways to achieve this is to not draw as big, close other applications while
working et.c.
