Follow-up Comment #1:
python-protobuf and its dependencies is available in Debian testing and
unstable. This is an isolated part of the system and it is probably not be
problematic to use it on Debian stable. I believe a couple of users are using
it already.

If this package does not work you should grab the source package and rebuild
it to get a new (hopefully working) deb.
