Follow-up Comment #2, bug #18292 (project mypaint):
Isn't it possible to (only at quit time) disable any problematic modes before
saving the state of the current brush?
This improves the situation to the point that you only get stuck if that
brush already had the erase or lock_alpha set, independently of the mode.
