Follow-up Comment #4, bug #18408 (project mypaint):

To be honest I rarely use the copy/paste feature since I don't see a
way to "slide" a layer or mask a selection for copying. In this
instance it was literally 30 seconds of dab-dab-dab with an eraser
that seemed to bring it down; as for memory, I have 3 gig of physical
as well as 3 gig of swap; mypaint is currently allocating 1.6gig for a 105m
ora.
While zoomed out, I wonder if a large tool is creating an abundance of new
tiles and pushing it over the edge.
