Follow-up Comment #12, bug #18442 (project mypaint):
I just installed the dev version from a fresh GIT clone into a new prefix.
This time the program starts normally. I assume something was accidentally
broken on my end at some time.
It could have been a corruption in some file...I hope my hard drive isn't
starting to fail.
Anyway, all is fixed now. Don't worry over it anymore.
