Follow-up Comment #12, bug #18293 (project mypaint):
I like that design a lot more than the toolbox embedding used now, but it's
one of those "this should be optional" things in my opinion. Specifically, a
toggle for either using in-window toolboxes or letting the window manager
control them, with the demo-style control being default. I know there's a
desire to keep the number of options low, but this is one of those things that
probably needs it, because I think it's unlikely one solution can work for all
users.
It seems like a great idea for systems with rubbish window managers (Windows)
and users with single displays. There seems to be an expectation of MDI-like
interfaces on Windows, so something like that might be preferred there. It
also may work better with netbook-friendly environments such as KDE's
plasma-netbook and that Ubuntu netbook environment, where every window is
automatically maximised.
However, for other setups, such as Linux users with sane window management,
or users with multiple displays (like I have), it's probably better to let the
window manager control everything. Better tested, follows user expectations
and custom WM settings, and the WM will do a better job of handling spreading
the toolboxes across multiple displays than an MDI-style interface will.
