Follow-up Comment #2:
Screen updates look the same for me when I use GTK+ 3.9.2. (Works fine with
GTK+ 3.4.2.) When I pan the canvas it is fixed.
In addition, the persistent brush selector is broken, it does not display the
brushes (also only in that GTK version).
