Details:
AppData is a new file format (Spec:
http://www.freedesktop.org/software/appstream/docs/sect-AppStream-Metadata-AppData.html)
that, when shipped with a software package has the advantage that the
respective application is presented in a much slicker way in Gnome's and KDE's
software centers. Roughly like this:

And here's an example with translations being enabled:
