I've a branch myself now that does the stacking thing and implements the W3C
SVG layers model in part:

. Their spec has moved to http://www.w3.org/TR/compositing-1/ , btw.
Quite a major refactor, unfortunately; though it also adds things like support
for SVG layers (or anything else GdkPixbuf can load)
