You know that I (as a user) would prefer brush modes (which does not exclude that we have layer modes, too). I would should up about this argument that I have made for years now, but I finally have a working prototype :-) Demo video: http://maxy.homeip.net/misc/blend_modes4.ogv You can try it on my blend_modes4 branch. I would be interested how you think this works in terms of workflow.
