To export PNGs in Inkscape
- layers dialog
- unlock the base layer
- select the white background marking the area you want to export
- hide the base layer, export

- select the white background marking the area you want to export
- set document size to that
- delete the base layer and any bits you don't need
- save as standard, non-inkscape SVG
Are these automatically generated from the svgz, or do we convert them
to png ourselves once we make the svgz template?
No automatic conversion takes place.
If you need to make an icon, there are some resources out there you
could use; see http://wiki.mypaint.info/Icon_Design . Ultimately I want
to coordinate efforts on making MyPaint's icons look pretty there, but
as you can see right now there are rendering issues and everything's
very incomplete and broken in many ways. Still, tango-art-libre and
tango-icon-theme make a good start, and there are guidelines you can
actually see the pictures on in the Wayback Machine.
