presently, we use mysql-proxy 0.6.1 to direct all queries to localhost
to a powerful mysql server - no read slaves here.
however, we use pacemaker & drbd to manage the mysql-server as well as
the mysql-proxy instances.
what i noticed is, that if we use "SET NAMES UTF8" and execute 100+
queries, the collation might get lost. i suspect this is related to
the connection pooling but had no time to try mysql-proxy 0.7 to
see if this issue is gone.
