I seem to be having the same problem, Installed Mysql by the book, but can't
get it running. I checked my logs and found this:
010111 14:27:01 mysqld started
010111 14:27:02 /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld: Can't create/write to file
'/usr/local/mysql/data/MP3Box.pid' (Errcode: 13)
010111 14:27:02 /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld: Can't find file:
'./mysql/host.frm' (errno: 13)
010111 14:27:02 /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld: Error on delete of
'/usr/local/mysql/data/MP3Box.pid' (Errcode: 2)
010111 14:27:02 mysqld ended
Any help there?

As already suggested, check your error logs but also check that it isn't
already running. You can do this with a ps -ef | grep mysqld command.
