newbie question - autostarting mysql

I can start mysql from the command line with the "safe_mysqld --user=root &" call with 
no problem. When mysqld is launched from init.d at startup (or when mysqld is called 
from the command line) I get the following:
/usr/libexec/mysqld Can't find file: ./mysql/host.frm (errno13)
Can someone help?
