I have very similar problem on my MySQL 3.23.29-gamma-log.
Rus, your query does not work. More over it looks like either I don't understand what
is going on in this world, or MySQL has a big flow.

If you try a query
select gid, user from games group by gid having user <> 'jack'
and after that a query
select gid, user from games group by gid having user <> 'john'

the results will surprise you a lot. At least they did it with me.

Am I completely out of the process?

Best regards,
Lumberer.
