Without a doubt SuSE linux. It is quickly becoming the most stable linux
platform and has been blessed by Oracle as the most stable linux
distrubtion. I have used all distributions and starting using linux back in
the day when you had to compile your first kernel out of the box (like 0.97
I think) and am currently using SuSE 7.0. I have just ripped Red Hat off a
bunch of VA-Linux hardware and am running SuSE instead.

Unlead Red Hat, new releases are very stable, none of this two subsequent
dot releases to get the damn OS to work right. Check them out, www.suse.com.

SuSE was slow to gain popularity in the US since it is European based, but
they now have an office in the Bay area.

Try it out.

p.s. If you do happen to follow the lemmings and use Red Hat, stick with
6.2, do not try 7.0 until 7.2 is released.

Subject: Suggestion for new linux box

I'm going to be setting up a development machine using linux (I'm currently
doing work with Win2K). My intent is to make sure I can do MySQL and PHP on
a linux machine.

As a newbie to linux, what would be the best distribution of linux for me to
use? I don't mind paying a few bucks for the CD at the local Best Buy or
CompUSA -- in fact, this would be preferable.

Is there any particular version that MySQL is most stable with?

Thanks!
