Hello list... problems installing on Linux red hat.

I've been a computer user since 1983 I'm really good at windows... haven't
done much Linux. Long story...but a programming partner/associate passed
away leaving me "unlearned" on our server.
problem... need to install mysql...
I got mysql installed... even got it starting up at boot time. I can't
connect.
waded through many problems... first problem was... bad permissions on all
files. -R option does not work on chown with symbolic links.
Please help... if you can call a US 800 number and help me out for a few
minutes I'll send you a FREE cordless telephone. (I'm in the telephone
business.) - I won't expect much for the phone... but please don't call if
you don't think you can help. I've read and read... but I think one or two
little things are messing me up... (I don't even know where to gunzip the
perl modules to)... sorry... lack of Linux experience... but I won't asking
you what a mouse or keyboard is.
