I hd this same problem.  Ensure that /var, /var/lib, and /var/lib/mysql have
permissions set to:  drwxr-xr-x

This cured the problem for me.

Are you sure that your MySQL installation creates the socket right there?
If
I'm not mistaken, it may be created in /tmp.
