I have some further information about the problem I'm having. To refresh:
certain queries that used to work on my old server are now failing, giving
me the error:

ERROR 2013: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

TO test the problem, I enabled logging, and was keeping an eye on my log
file. Every time I try to execute this query, the mysql server mysteriously
restarts. I don't know if that helps or not, but I have tried updating just
about every variable I can think of, including:

max_allowed_packet
net_buffer_length
sort_buffer
tmp_table_size

I set all of these variables incredibly high just to see if they were
causing the problem, and they were not.

Please, does anyone have any idea?
