Hi all,

I am just getting started so please forgive me for asking such a trivial
question. Any/all responses will be greatly appreciated.

I recently installed the source distribution of mysql 3.23.34a
(mysql-3.23.34a.tar.gz) on a Cobalt Raq4+. Most of the installation went
smoothly exactly as the instructions described it. I could not read all of
the output from the various installation scripts but when it was all
finished it all looked right and mysql ran fine.

I launched mysqld with safe_mysqld and tested it out using the command line.
Everything seemed to be working.

I want to set it up to start & stop automatically.

All of the documentation instructs me to open mysql.server and change the
line mysql_daemon_user=root to the standard mysqlusr I set up earlier in the
installation.

I have grep-ed the entire mysql directory and the only place I can find
mysql_daemon_user is in the info file, which is exactly like the
documentation.

Am I missing something basic here? Is it possible this is a sign of a
problem with my installation? Is the documentation wrong?

I want to make sure I get this right because of all the warnings of security
risks if this is not set right.

Thanks in advance for helping me.
