I had the same problem.
Ensure that /var, /var/lib, and /var/lib/mysql have their permissions set
to: drwxr-xr-x

Subject: [NEWBIE] safe_mysqld

When I attempt to launch mysql server with command safe_mysqld, the console
return this:

"starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql"
"010327 19:33:37 mysqld ended"

I use RedHat 7.0 Linux on Intel
