Gerald -

My rpm was hosed.  I downloaded from a rh ftp site and got it installed.
Now back to installing zlib - see command below:

/linuxrpms>rpm -ivh zlib-1.1.3-6.i386.rpm
failed dependencies:
        /sbin/ldconfig   is needed by zlib-1.1.3-6

I'm not having any luck figuring this out...

Looks like you may have trashed rpmrc.
Does it exist?

If not, you have a problem. Check with Red Hat.
