Yes, of course - I started from mysql binary and compiled the new one only when it failed. It was in the beginning of the thread
BTW - it compiled on Gentoo without a problem. Just emerge mysql-4.0.20.ebuild and it runs till the end. And works fine - but again - only on one CPU.
