I have copied the mysql-medium.cnf to /etc/my.cnf and have noticed that the "max-allowed-packet" is 1M. no matter what I set it to 8M, 10M, 16M I still get the error.
did you try this in your my.cnf in the [mysqld] section ? set-variable = max_allowed_packet=8M
