unicode urgent

hi i want to do a insert query which contains utf 8 (japanese characters) characters in the database but surprisingly when i done this it stores ??? and also when i retrieves it fails to give actual  picture iam using mysql 4.1.b alpha using mysqlcc as my editor and dos promt   looking for your kind help    DD TATA INFOTECH LTD
