I recommend you use the Intel compiled version of the MySQL pre-compiled binaries for maximum speed. For x86 32bit architecture Linux, you should use:

http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-4.1/mysql-standard-4.1.8-pc-linux-i686-icc-glibc23.tar.gz/from/pick

You'll also need to install the Intel ICC shared libraries:

http://dev.mysql.com/Downloads/Linux/intel-icc8-libs-8.0-i386.tar.gz

or

http://dev.mysql.com/Downloads/Linux/intel-icc8-libs-8.0-0.i386.rpm
