SELECT MAX(LENGTH(...)) FROM ... ought to work.
SQL doesn't allow aggregate funcs like MAX() in the WHERE clause. Use HAVING().
For nested queries like SELECT ... WHERE colvalue=(SELECT...) you need version 4.1 or later.
