that's where the pain starts :-) If you're trying to run multiple versions of MySQL for pre-migration testing (or whatever), *don't use rpms* -- get the tar file of the binary, and just untar it as /usr/local/mysql-4.1.12 or whatever. It will be *so* much simpler to switch between the old and new, or run them simultaneously as needed.
