I am currently investigating which software to use for a database and search engine for a site currently under construction. We are a mac-based design studio that has designed and constructed a 400 or so page site, which is basically a product catalogue. We want to include a simple search mechanism to enable users to search for part numbers, or search by key word. A database would be created that would have the following simple fields: Part No Product description Key words html link The search engine would simply give a list of part numbers corresponding to the search request, with the html page link. The site is located on a UNIX server in New Zealand. The site manager has suggested that we use Mysql or Access for the database and search engine. Or to simply use javascripts or cgis. As we are designers, not programmers, we want to utilise a software package that is powerful enough for this purpose and also meet other site needs in the future. Would Mysql be suitable for our purpose, and is it mac-compatible? Look forward to your advice.
