How _exactly_ are you "doing a transfer from our current datafile to MySQL"? Not only can technique make a difference but some of your server's settings may also need tweaking (based on the capaciity of your hardware). How "beefy" is your server? How did you configure your server's settings? Are you transferring this over a network or is the source file local to the server? There are so many variables to consider....
