FLUSH PRIVILEGES; Thank you. That solved the problem connecting from the mysql client. It changed the problem connecting via the 'Test' button from the ODBC Administrator, to an 'authentication protocol' message. Apparently Connector/ODBC 3.51 uses the old protocol.
