Yep you could use the mysql-max RPM for a 3.23 version. But going from 3.23 to 4.0 is fairly straightforward: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Upgrading-from-3.23.html The only thing you need to mind is to also download and install the -shared-compat RPM, which contains the 3.23 libraries as well as the 4.0 libs, to keep some apps on FC3 happy which use 3.23 (Python for instance).
