Hi, The two passwords are totally separate. The MySQL root users password controls access only to the MySQL databases and tables. sudo password will allow you access to bash scripts/programs etc.
You could test this by logging in as a user other than root having run mysql client as a sudo command. You will find you have no further access than the user you have logged in as. The manual has a good section on permissions.
