I would think this list is more likely to be able to assist with problems using the standard installer from MySQL than with some third party installer / package management system.
I would suggest using Disk Utility to repair permissions on your hard disc (just in case some relevant directory cannot be read/written to), then download the appropriate installer from mysql.com and let the list know what problems you encounter with that.
