Ports closed? Wrong ports configured?
I don't think so, since even with "telnet localhost 3306" or "telnet 127.0.0.1 3306" I'm able to see the server prompt.. and I'm using the standard MySQL port for sure (it's a clean installation); and there are no firewall active...
